Everyday I’m surprised at how much us girls are willing to spend on basics. I don’t know who normalized spending $50 on a halter top at Urban Outfitters or Free People but I can never bring myself to pay that much for basics that aren’t even that cute. Okay, I mean they’re cute but for $50? They better be more than just basic, but they’re not. After hours and hours of browsing online stores and focusing on saving money, I’ve found that the best way to get your money’s worth is to just define basics differently. Define basics as things you wear consistently and that are comfortable for you instead of just the traditional halter tank or cropped tee that comes in like two colors. Think of basics as something you’d wear going to class while still looking cute. I mean, who said basics can’t be trendier and comfier? For me, I have 5 main basics that I wear almost everyday to class and that are way cheaper and trendier than whatever Urban is selling as their “basics” right now.

1. The Cropped Denim Jacket

One easy way to make an outfit look cuter in 5 seconds is a cropped denim jacket. I have several of these in so many different colors and they make your outfit look like you actually tried in the mornings, when in reality, you didn’t have to at all. My favorite jacket I own is actually from Abercrombie & Fitch (I know right?) but there are so many cheaper options like PrettyLittleThing, or if you’re looking for quality over price, Topshop and BlankNYC both sell cropped jackets that scream trendy.

2. Baggy Tees but Different

Okay so I know that baggy t-shirts as dresses aren’t a new concept as a basic, but what if your oversized tee didn't have the name of a random soccer team that you were on in high school or of that one vacation spot your family goes to every summer? I think this is my favorite trend out of all five listed on this post just because it’s the simplest one and the cheapest one by far. Thrift stores, your boyfriend, the men’s section; almost anywhere. These are all places that you can cheaply find oversized tees that will be guaranteed to look like you tried but didn’t, ya know? But if you can’t find any at these places, Boohoo (or BoohooMan) and PrettyLittleThing have you covered (and cheaply too).

3. The Cropped Hoodie

Okay, so I’m telling you, this is 100% a must have. You don’t even need cute pants (which is the best part) and it’s so comfortable and versatile that I wear this EVERYWHERE. By everywhere I mean everywhere: the gym, to class, to run errands, ANYWHERE. Honestly, the best part about wearing cropped hoodies is that they're super flattering and comfortable while still being SO accessible and cheap. Thrift stores, Marshalls, Ross, and TJ Maxx all have hoodies that you can crop on your own instead of paying an insane price for one that is already cut for you. The best part is that even if your specific sizes aren't available in the cute hoodies, it doesn’t matter because you’re gonna crop them anyways. But if you are looking for already cropped ones, Topshop and Brandy Melville sell plenty.

4. The Slip Dress

People ask me all the time why I wear dresses when I could be wearing jeans or pants or honestly, anything else. Maybe I’m crazy, but I think that slip dresses are more comfortable than wearing pants or bottoms. Ever since 90s fashion has been coming back, there has been a huge emphasis on comfortable style which I think is amazing because not wearing pants is the dream. Slip dresses are the perfect mix between cute and comfortable while also being super on the current trend and looking like you 100% know what you're doing. At this point, they’re sold almost anywhere but beware, Urban Outfitters’s slip dresses will break on you even though the price tag is the cost of a small house. Born to Be Chic, Windsor, and honestly, anywhere sells these, so be sure to grab one on your next shopping trip.

5. THAT Pair of Joggers

I know I’ve talked about how much I hate bottoms probably a million times but joggers are the only bottoms that I will wear on a daily basis. They come in so many colors and are so incredibly comfortable because they’re just like sweatpants, but “trendy”. That's why going to class in the winters is going to be a lot easier (I promise you) because all you have to pull on is a pair of joggers and a cropped hoodie and boom, outfit made. And it only took half a minute. For me, finding the best joggers include having a tighter fit instead of relaxed fit and having more than just the basic colors (black, white, grey). My favorite jogger brand is SLA the Label because they have a huge color selection and even their relaxed fit joggers fit me perfectly. Other than that, I love Alphalete and NEU Apparel, both of which are on the pricier side but worth it if you’re looking to invest in joggers that won’t discolor or shrink.

I hope that this post helped you redefine the basics in your wardrobe so that you’re not dropping your whole paycheck on three items. The goal is to look put together and trendy as cheaply as possible, right? Hopefully, you can find yourself some new items that make it outside your closet everyday and make you feel your best whether you’re in class, working out, or just out and about. Happy shopping!!

I feel like a huge dilemma in the next few months for college girls is probably what to wear to parties, because chances are, you’ve already worn the few outfits you know are cute. It really is hard to blur the line for outfits because it's already so hard to find a cute look, right? Plus, finding stores without the same four tops can get really time consuming AND expensive. Like, who's trying to keep paying for $50 Urban Outfitters tops that are definitely overprice? Not me, that's for sure. So I’m here to help with some trendy, out of the box brands to kick off your back to school season and make looking cute while partying cheaper and easier.

1. BabyBoo Fashion

@babyboofashion

The quality of Babyboo is unmatched for their prices. The Australian based company launched with the purpose of making you feel and look incredible and I promise you, their clothes do just that. Whether its their sparkle cropped tanks, neon bodysuits, or knotted bandeaus, BabyBoo fashion definitely has something for you. Their tops can be on the Urban side of prices but with constant sales and discounts you can find on influencers' pages, the tops become so much more affordable (and therefore, cuter, right??).

2. Femme Luxe

@femmeluxefinery

This company has the basics you need for any party with prices to match. Many other companies like Urban Outfitters or Brandy Melville have these basics but I can promise you the prices at Femme Luxe will beat any others when it comes to basic tops that are affordable while still cute and comfortable. The British brand has a large selection of colors when it comes to their basics too, so you can buy several tops at the price of one Urban halter (but that honestly isn't a tough thing to do).

@femmeluxefinery

3. Misspap

Misspap undeniably has some of the most creative and out of the box ideas mixed with today’s trends. Basically, Misspap will elevate your outfit with just one piece, and not many brands can do that. Their tops will make you stand out at any party, while still holding onto that trendy, hot vibe that you want your outfit to have. AND their prices are ridiculously low too, so how could you not love this British brand?

Three (hopefully) new sites and brands later, I hope that you’re able to find some tops for your parties with that broke girl budget we all have that are trendier and cheaper than those 3 million dollar Urban Out From Under tops you've been paying for. And I know that with these brands, you definitely will. Happy shopping!!

Remember when your friends asked you what you were going to wear last week to a birthday dinner? 9/10 your response was “jeans and a nice top”. Every girl knows those events or days when you want to look cute but feel like just wearing jeans and maybe not a skirt or dress (I know I definitely do). But weirdly, it’s so hard to dress up your jeans with just a top because sometimes picking the top is just as difficult as deciding something like who’s driving to the dinner. Down below are four different kinds of cute tops you can pair with your favorite denim when you’re just feeling a “jeans and a nice top” kinda day.

1. The Strapless Bustier

@lradwell

This currently trending top is a cute and flirty top that automatically dresses up any pair of jeans you own. They are sold basically everywhere and at different price points depending on what you’re looking for. This yellow bustier top above and the white below are both from OhPolly and if you’re on Instagram at all, you’ve probably seen them on every influencer. They may not seem as mainstream for the everyday girl but I promise you, it is my number one pick when I’m feeling a simple, uncomplicated outfit.

2. The Little White Crop

Recently, this staple shirt has been reinvented into a new fun and comfortable classic: the white crop. Brands worldwide have launched their take of the white crop in this past season and it's no longer a boring basic. Now, it’s the perfect addition to your favorite fitting jeans to dress up a look in a fast and extremely easy way. House of Cb and Verge Girl have the perfect take of the little white crop your closet NEEDS.

3. The New and Improved Bodysuit

Bodysuits have been trending for years now and every season a new staple bodysuit emerges. Recently, I’ve been loving bodysuits with a twist; ones that are not as traditional but still can be dressed up or down with my jeans. The best thing about bodysuits is how comfortable they are while still being probably the most flattering top you can wear with jeans or any pants. Missy Empire, Windsor, and PrettyLittleThing have the cutest and CHEAPEST bodysuits that keep you looking hot in your jeans.

4. The Strappy Back

@veregegirl

This look is perfect for a warmer day out or an evening watching the sunset because of how open the back of the top is. These white tops with strappy backs add a little flirt to the already so cute but basic front of the tops. It’s also super comfortable and convenient for when you’re not really feeling wearing a bra (so basically all the time). They work perfectly with any pair of jeans but look super cute with some light wash boyfriend denim. Verge Girl has a million styles of these tops and I bet you’ll definitely find one you love.

@charlottebridgeman

All of these tops are super comfortable, super cute, and most of them don’t even require a bra (thats the best part). So next time you’re looking for your go to jeans and a nice top outfit, think of maybe switching out your basic cropped tee for a strapless bustier or creative and cute bodysuit and give your “jeans and a nice top” look a whole different meaning. Happy shopping!!
